You’re not the first to ask and, if our crystal balls are working correctly, you won’t be the last. Let’s get you some answers!
What is strategic foresight?
Strategic foresight is a data-driven practice for developing plausible future scenarios in order to inform today's decisions.
Why does strategic foresight matter to my organization?
The global business climate is increasingly volatile, uncertain and reliant on emerging technologies. Organizations that fail to discern and respond to what lies ahead will not survive.
Why is FTSG the best partner for strategic foresight work?

Do you predict the future?
Nope! Strategic foresight isn't about predicting the future, it's about preparing for any future. When we get it right, it’s not because we’re looking into a crystal ball. It’s because we’ve thoroughly examined how emerging technologies may interact with the broader societal, cultural and environmental forces in our world.
What is the difference between strategic foresight and traditional forecasting?
Foresight and forecasting ultimately serve different purposes. Strategic foresight helps organizations prepare for multiple plausible scenarios, fostering resilience and adaptability. Forecasting, on the other hand, often relies on past data to make specific and singular predictions about the future. While extremely useful in some cases – we're definitely not the folks to try and tell you tomorrow's weather – it can be limited by the assumption that the future will follow the patterns of the past.
How does strategic foresight turn into action?
Turning strategic foresight into action is the most important step of the whole process, but it’s often overlooked. We use tools like gap analysis to assess where an organization is versus where it wants to be, and backcasting to map the steps needed to get there. It’s about breaking big, long-term ideas into clear, actionable milestones. The key is making sure foresight directly informs strategic planning. Without this connection, foresight risks becoming a theoretical exercise instead of a catalyst for meaningful change.
Who in my organization can use strategic foresight?
Everyone. Ultimately, foresight is most valuable when it becomes embedded in an organization's culture – helping teams at every level think creatively, anticipate change, and make more informed decisions. At FTSG, we typically start the process alongside executives in strategy, innovation, insights, research & development, marketing, product, and finance.
